Agentunel

ChatGPT extension and command line tool

Let ChatGPT work on the files in one folder of your computer.

Agentunel is an extension for ChatGPT, with a small command line tool next to it. You choose a project folder, and from a normal ChatGPT chat it can read and write the files in that folder and run commands there. Think of it as a lighter, scrappier Codex that uses the ChatGPT you already have. No API key.

Windows 10 or later, or Linux on x86_64. Works with Chrome, Edge, Brave and other Chromium browsers.

What it is, and what it is not

An extension that talks to your terminal

The extension sits on chatgpt.com. The command line tool sends your task to that chat, then does what ChatGPT asks inside your folder: list files, read them, write them, run commands.

Scoped to a folder you pick

You run it from a project folder, and file access stays inside that folder plus any extra ones you allow. Chats are saved per project, so you can pick up where you left off.

Simpler than Codex, on purpose

There is no sandbox and no agent runtime of its own, just ChatGPT in your browser plus a bridge. It is rougher around the edges, and it needs no API key or extra subscription.

Download

The installer puts the agentunel command on your PATH and unpacks the browser extension next to it.

Browser extension

Required, and the installer already unpacks it for you. Use these if you want it on its own or in another browser.

Set up in three steps

  1. Run the installer

On Windows, open AgentunelSetup.exe. On Linux, extract the archive and run sh install.sh. Then open a new terminal.

  2. Load the extension, once

The installer shows the extension folder. Open your browser's extensions page, turn on Developer mode, choose Load unpacked and select that folder. Then sign in at chatgpt.com.

  3. Ask for something

Open a terminal in any project folder and run agentunel "create a snake game". Keep chatting from the same prompt, and type /exit when you are done.

Good to know

It stays on your machine
The CLI listens on 127.0.0.1 only while a task runs, and each session uses its own random token. File access is limited to your project folder and the folders you allow.
Commands run as you
There is no sandbox. Shell commands run with your own user permissions. Use agentunel --block-commands if you want to approve each one first.
Your chats stay yours
Chats are normal ChatGPT conversations. Agentunel keeps a local list per project, so agentunel --chats shows the ones for the folder you are in.
Git is optional
If Git is installed, each finished task becomes a commit, so you can review or undo it. You can turn that off with agentunel --block-git.
It follows the page
Agentunel drives the ChatGPT website, so a large redesign of that page can break it until the extension is updated.
